“What is the greatest lesson a woman should learn?
That since day one
she's already had everything she needs within herself
it's the world that convinced her she did not."
-Rupi Kaur
In the world that has constantly tried to suppress women and cage them in shackles of discrimination, we have drawn and made our dream of flying high, a reality. Women, have supported each other and have proven that empowered women, empower. By fighting against injustice to make our place in this male oriented society, we have proved that if the society cuts our wings, we have claws to reach wherever we want to.
From the women whom society regarded inferior to men, constantly abused both physically and mentally, took advantage of and weighed down with their atrocities, to women who are resilient to use their rights and are now in powerful positions, we have come a long way. Though there is progress, there is still discrimination in some areas regarding gender equality and an orthodox mindset that women are a burden and are made to work only in the household.
All women at some point wished that they were men and picture how better their lives would be if they were of the opposite gender because the society has been biased so many times. Because of this kind of thinking, many of us think that we are a disgrace and don't deserve happiness. We keep on giving and forgetting that we, ourselves deserve so much better and more.
When my mother was younger, like many other parents, there were restrictions on her regarding time and clothes. After she got married, she told my grandmother that she always wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle. My grandmother supported her and encouraged her to learn in spite of the fact that numerous ladies in the society mocked at her to not keep her daughter in law 'in control', that it was very un-woman to ride a motorcycle. My mother was the first woman in my society to ride a motorcycle. This might sound like a small thing, but back in her time, it was a heroic act.
When women support women, incredible things happen.
Fast forward today, there are so many women in my society who have learnt to ride a motorcycle. When a woman stands up for herself, she unknowingly stands up for hundreds of other women.
"There is no limit to what we,
as women, can accomplish,"
- Michelle Obama
To all the women out there, you can be whatever you want to. Even when some of you don't get enough appraisal for what you are, remember, you, a piece of art, will always remain art.
You are so much more than the vision with which the society looks at you,
You are so much more than you know.
