HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED THERAPY?

Updated: Aug 29, 2020

So many times we experience feelings that make us ask the question, “What is happening to me?”. Some of us also realize that we need help but don’t consider seeking professional help or therapy because we feel that therapy is only for “extreme” situations. What we don’t understand is that the effect of situations and feelings cannot be compared because what affected me deeply, wouldn't necessarily affect you that way. Therapy can help people in dealing with mental health concerns, challenges, and emotional difficulties. As we progress in life, we come across many challenges that may affect our well-being. We cannot expect ourselves to know everything and need to accept that we can reach out for help.

Should I Go To Therapy?

Many of us experience some common signs that indicate that something is bothering us on a deeper level and needs professional attention. Others can just lend their support, but reaching out for help is what we need to do by ourselves. Research shows that people who voluntarily go for therapy, experience better effects as compared to people who are forced into therapy. You need to take a step for yourself and consider therapy to reap its maximum benefits. When I was first suggested to go for therapy, I remember how reluctant I was because I thought all my feelings were 'just a phase'. But if I was educated about the common signs pointing out to my need for therapy, maybe I would've signed up for sessions sooner.

Here are some common signs that can help you understand whether you need therapy:

  1. Disturbed Sleeping Patterns: If you are experiencing disturbed sleeping patterns like oversleeping and insomnia for a while now, there could be underlying reasons for them that need to be taken care of. Experiencing sensitive sleep or scary dreams that disturb you could be an indication that you need therapy.

  2. Impact on Appetite: If you are noticing that you are overeating or undereating for quite some time now, or are getting addicted to something, for example, coffee or even something that you consider healthy, it’s time to seek help. Anything if not consumed in balance, including healthy food can be harmful to your mental and physical well-being.

  3. You feel Overwhelmed and Fatigued: We all feel overwhelmed and tired at times. But, finding yourself this way most of the time can have an impact on your daily life. For example, I remember how I used to feel so tired all the time that I couldn’t muster the strength to even take a bath. You may feel that there is a lot on your plate that you are not able to deal with. You may not be able to rest mentally or maybe even breathe properly at times due to stress and in times like these, seek professional support.

  4. Disproportionate Expression of Feelings: You might be experiencing disproportionate fits of anger, breakdown, or feelings of resentment in situations. Everybody feels angry or sad at times. But, if you feel that these feelings are not passing, you are getting extreme mood swings often, your feelings are getting piled up and are extreme when compared to the situation, seeking professional help could be a very helpful idea!

  5. Anxious Thoughts: Having anxious thoughts all the time is not healthy for you and could be an indication of something that is bothering you deeply.

  6. Social Withdrawal: Withdrawing yourself from social situations due to various reasons such as, the fear of being judged, getting a panic attack, or feeling “trapped” and having a feeling of being alone due to these reasons, is a sign to reach out for help.

  7. Losing Interest: Losing interest and motivation to do activities that you usually enjoyed doing, feeling hopeless about the future to the point where you even stop trying could be an indication of a mental health concern.

Even if you aren’t experiencing the above signs/symptoms and just want to grow as a person, get an insight within yourself, and want to discuss your issues, therapy is a great option.

How Will Therapy Help You?

  • Therapy will help you to know yourself and grow as a person.

  • It will give you a stranger’s perspective on your issues.

  • It will help you to understand your mental health concerns to a deeper level so that you can work on it from the roots.

  • It will help you to get clarity in your thoughts & actions.

  • It can help you in achieving your goals.

  • It improves all areas of your life - both personal and professional.

  • It will help you to develop a healthier relationship with yourself and others.

  • It will help you deal with toxicity in your life and will enable you to adopt a positive approach towards life.

If you already tried going for therapy and it didn’t work for you, DON’T QUIT! Not every therapist’s approach can work for you and you need to communicate about this with your therapist. I understand how difficult it is to trust therapy if one approach or one therapist didn’t work for you. But we need to understand that there is no one correct approach to mental health concerns. If one approach didn’t work for you, it doesn’t mean another approach will fail to bring a change, too. Don’t let this stop you from continuing to reach out. Therapy takes time and you need to be patient through the process. You will be amazed to see your growth when you are consistent with therapy.
