Therapy is a slow and ongoing process that requires consistency for growth. It helps you to dive deeper into yourself that may be overwhelming at times but, is also necessary. You might come face to face with truths about yourself that you don’t want to accept. You might feel that therapy is “too much” or “tiring”. In all these times, I want you to know that it is important to stick with therapy, no matter how hard things get.
Here’s why:
Therapy takes time
As we saw earlier, therapy is an ongoing process. It requires time, patience, and dedication. It may not always show you immediate results because your therapist has to know you from deep inside and has to make sure that you dive inside yourself, too - so that growth takes place from within. If this is done hastily, it may get overwhelming and one might not be able to absorb all the lessons learned and therefore, not be able to apply them.
You need to know yourself first, in order to change yourself Consider this, I am feeling feverish but am unable to recognize the fatigue or drowsiness. Naturally, I won’t be able to seek help about the same because I won’t know how to explain what is happening to me. When we are aware of our feelings, we can consciously deal with them healthily, with clarity. We understand the effects they are having on us which were toxic all this time, but we didn’t know because we weren’t clear about how we were feeling. So, if you feel like discontinuing therapy on the basis of an overwhelming feeling, please don’t. The fact that you are feeling your emotions itself means you’ve made progress.
If you leave something in the middle, you won’t be able to see the final destination If you leave the journey mid-way, how will you be able to see your grown self? One doesn’t want to be on a cliffhanger with a question in their mind that, “What would’ve happened if I had continued with therapy?” You need to wait till the end and go through the obstacles that come in your way because you can’t give up on yourself when things get tough, right?
It helps you grow into the person you want to be Therapy will help you in building your personality, develop your thinking skills, and will help you grow emotionally and mentally. Sticking with therapy will ensure growth and development in all areas of your life. It will help you in becoming the person you want yourself to be in the future and that can take time.
It only gets better with time Once you become more open to knowing your true self, accept the parts that you don’t like about yourself and gradually move past it by going to therapy, things will get better because you will know how to handle them, healthily. You will start focusing more on the ‘how to change things that don’t work for me’ part and not the ‘why am I like this?’ part.
Hearing others talk about how therapy has benefitted them can help you stick with it!
Here’s what some of our happy clients have to say about their journey in therapy with us:
“I’m really happy about how far I’ve come.”
“There are certain people who touch our lives at certain points in our life’s journey. I am forever grateful for having met my counselor through The Mood Space and for the growth they have helped me achieve.”
“It was a great fruitful experience. I just realized how much we can be happy with ourselves, without requiring someone or something permanently. I learned not to feel sad about things I can't control. Overall I am very grateful and would love to revert back to The Mood Space in the future, if required, and would recommend it to any friends or family member who requires therapy.”
"I needed someone to talk with, who would not judge me and also who would not dump me with advice. But be friendly and see me how I see me from outside and give professional guidance. I got this at The Mood Space.”
I understand that you might feel overwhelmed while dealing with multiple emotions during therapy. In these times, I want you to remember that you have already come a long way. Let’s understand that therapy only makes us come face-to-face with things that already existed. Trust in the process and your therapist because they are trained to deal with your feelings and will help you do so, too.
Successfully completing therapy will make you meet your new and healthier self and it will definitely be worth it. I hope you stick with therapy, even when things get difficult. There is always a dark night before the sun can shine!
